MASTERING THE SECRETS OF THE ADJECTIVES WORD ORDER


How do you memorize the order of adjectives?

Sometimes you want to use more than one adjective in describing something or someone in a sentence, and you are confused as to which one should come before the other. Well, there is a simple way to master the adjectives word order.

The easiest way to master the order of adjectives is to use the acronym DOSASCOMP:

D: Determiner

O: Opinion

S: Size

A: Age

S: Shape

C: Colour

O: Origin

M: Material

P: Purpose

You also need to bear some factors in mind, namely:

  1. Opinions come before facts, e.g. a wise Jewish man (wise = opinion; Jewish = fact).
  2. General ideas come before specific ideas, e.g. a small Japanese car (small = general; Japanese = specific).
  3. Age comes before colour, e.g. a new blue car (NOT a blue new car).
