How do you memorize the order of adjectives?
Sometimes you want to use more than one adjective in describing something or someone in a sentence, and you are confused as to which one should come before the other. Well, there is a simple way to master the adjectives word order.
The easiest way to master the order of adjectives is to use the acronym DOSASCOMP:
D: Determiner
O: Opinion
S: Size
A: Age
S: Shape
C: Colour
O: Origin
M: Material
P: Purpose
You also need to bear some factors in mind, namely:
- Opinions come before facts, e.g. a wise Jewish man (wise = opinion; Jewish = fact).
- General ideas come before specific ideas, e.g. a small Japanese car (small = general; Japanese = specific).
- Age comes before colour, e.g. a new blue car (NOT a blue new car).
