HOW TO ANSWER LEXIS AND STRUCTURE QUESTIONS IN WASSCE, NECO/SSCE

(Here’s an Audiovisual Lecture on How to Answer Lexis & Structure Questions in WASSCE, NOCO/SSCE: https://youtu.be/Uu5G7HvNC_w)

The easiest way to answer lexis and structure questions is to first master the grammatical rules that govern lexis and structure. Lexis refers to the words in a language, how they interact with one another, and how they are used to convey meaning in meaningful English sentences. Structure refers to the sentence structure and the various grammatical units that combine to form other higher units within the sentence. For example, morphemes combine to form a word; words combine to form a phrase; phrases combine to form a clause, and clauses combine to form a sentence. There are certain grammatical concepts that are relevant to lexis and structure: these include collocations, register, idioms and idiomatic expressions, the sequence of tenses, rules of concord, etc.

Your ability to apply grammatical rules to the interpretation of sentences will help you in ascertaining what constitutes a correct or an incorrect sentence. For instance, the use of tenses is central to the correct expression of ideas or reportage of events and their time of occurrence.
