How do you memorize the order of adjectives?

When talking about people or things, you often need to use two or more adjectives to describe them. In doing so, you sometimes get confused about which adjective to use before the order. This is why it’s necessary to learn the rules that govern the word order of adjectives.

The easiest way to master the order of adjectives is to use the acronym DOSASCOMP:

D: Determiner

O: Opinion

S: Size

A: Age

S: Shape

C: Colour

O: Origin

M: Material

P: Purpose

There are some other things that can help you to figure out the correct word order of adjectives. They include the following:

  1. Opinions come before facts, e.g. a beautiful Chinese woman (beautiful = opinion; Chinese = fact).
  2. General ideas come before specific ideas, e.g. a little British girl (little = general; British = specific).
  3. Age comes before colour, e.g. an old red bag (NOT a red old bag).
