What are the Steps for Answering Summary Questions?

  1. You have to read the questions first in order to find out what you have been asked to summarize in the passage. This will enable you to read with a purpose. Knowing what you’re looking for in the passage, you’ll underline or pick it out the moment you come across it.
  2. You need to read the passage at least two times, and ensure that you understand what it is about.
  3. Reread the questions to ensure that you fu ed to do.
  4. Pick the major ideas in the passage as instructed in the question.
  5. Rewrite those main ideas in new sentences with the aid of word-reduction techniques.
  6. Write your answers in the required number of sentences. For example, you can be asked to summarize the passage in six sentences. Make sure you present your answers exactly six sentences: no more, no less!
  7. You can use a preamble in presenting answers involving two or more sentences. This is optional.
