To communicate accurately and effectively in any language requires adequate knowledge of the rules that govern the use of that language. English is certainly not an exception. As a matter of fact, anyone who desires to gain proficiency in the use of English ought to learn English grammar. This is because learning English grammar is learning the rules that govern the use of English. There is no doubt that most of the errors committed by the majority of English speakers are attributable to poor grammar or inadequate knowledge of the rules that govern the use of English. The focus of this article is on the rules of concord.
The term concord refers to the grammatical agreement between two parts of a sentence. The rules of concord govern the way in which the parts of a sentence are arranged in order to achieve a grammatically correct expression. There are many rules of concord and the violation of these rules is responsible for the majority of grammatical errors committed by the users of English.
Take the subject and verb concord for example. This rule states that a singular subject requires a singular verb, whereas a plural subject should be used with a plural verb.
The boy is rude: ‘’The boy” is a singular subject; “is” is the singular verb. Now, if you should say “The boy are rude,” you’ve violated the rule of concord. This is because you’re using a plural verb with a singular subject. To correct this error, you have to pluralize the subject to correspond with the plural verb: “The boys are rude.”
The subject-verb concord is just one of the numerous rules of concord, all of which are of central importance to accurate communication in English.
